Inclosure 2 in No. 5.

Sir,

Administrator Smith to Sir H. Parkes.

Government House, Singapore, October 22, 1884.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your Excellency's despatches, noted in the margin,* which reached me by last mail.

2. I beg to convey to your Excellency the warm thanks of this Government for the very prompt action taken by your Excellency in order to obtain the revocation of the Proclamation issued by the high authorities of Canton, which has terminated with such successful results.

3. I have required the editor of the local Chinese newspaper to publish the Imperial Decree, with a copy of which your Excellency favoured me, and it appeared in yesterday's edition of that paper.

4. I am glad to be able to add that all is quiet here.

I have, &c. (Signed)

CECIL C. SMITH.
